A guide to the new language of accounting and finance Hussey, Roger, author. Business Expert Press 2021 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=9781637421291/lc.jpg A guide to the new language of accounting and finance The disciplines of accounting and finance have been rapidly changing in recent years. The methods and techniques being used have created a new language for managers, students, practitioners, academics. The Guide focuses specifically on the terms used in accounting and finance. Important terms and phrases are identified but with a much longer, in-depth explanation than you would normally find in a dictionary. Not only does each entry gives a thorough explanation of each term, it provides two or more references to academic articles that go into much greater depth. Hence, the entries give the reader immediate access to the literature.

Every child is beautiful when born : selected poems Babačić, Esad, author. Dalkey Archive Press 2021 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=9781628973402/lc.jpg Every child is beautiful when born : selected poems "In this, Esad Babačić's first book of poetry to appear in English, we have a very different and surprising voice emerging from Slovenia. The closest parallel is the poetry, as much as the attitude, of Charles Bukowski. It's the voice of the streets and it's a demotic voice, purged of the sense of the "beautiful." It could be described as jagged and rough, but done purposely to release poetry from well-worn traditional forms and style. His is a masterful voice, and one that should be heard and recognized outside of Slovenia, and here translated ingeniously by Andrej Pleterski."

Canzone di guerra = New battle songs Drndić, Daša, 1946-2018, author. Istros Books 2022 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=1912545926/lc.jpg Canzone di guerra = New battle songs "Tea Radan reflects on her own past and in doing so, composes a forgotten mosaic of historical events that she wants to first tear apart and then reassemble with all the missing fragments. In front of the readers eyes, a collage of different genres takes place - from (pseudo) autobiography to documentary material and culinary recipes. With them, the author skillfully explores different perspectives on the issue of emigration, the unresolved history of the Second World War, while emphasizing the absurdity of politics of differences between neighboring nations. The narrator subtly weaves the torturous story of searching for her own identity with a relaxed, sometimes disguised ironic style, which takes the reader surprisingly easily into the world of persecution and the sense of alienation between herself and others."

In this debut book in English, her poems range from avant-garde prose poems to more lyrical, if dark, free verse, as she examines isolation, death, and the passage of time -- and in the process, upends polite society and Korean literary culture."

Voices from the margins : gender and the everyday in women's pre- and post-agreement Troubles short fiction Campo, Mercedes del, 1983- author. Peter Lang 2022 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=178874330X/lc.jpg Voices from the margins : gender and the everyday in women's pre- and post-agreement Troubles short fiction "Through a textual analysis of Troubles short fiction, a genre with the same marginal status as women within Troubles literary criticism, this book explores the particular emphasis that women writers have placed on gender and the everyday in their Troubles narratives, two areas which have frequently been relegated to the margins of the 'official story' of the conflict and the peace process. Their short stories integrate the domestic plot into the larger historical framework of political violence in Northern Ireland, reconceptualizing and blurring the boundaries between the private and public realms and capturing the many ways in which the conflict is disruptive and destructive of the private space. Voices from the Margins shows how these women writers have rewritten the 'official story' with distinctive voices that have paid more attention to personal histories which highlight the conflict's impact on the individual than to a public History which has mainly centred on the binaries of pro- and anti-state nationalisms"

Women's agency and self-fashioning in early modern Tuscany : (1300-1600) Viella 2022 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=8833138682/lc.jpg Women's agency and self-fashioning in early modern Tuscany : (1300-1600) "The women profiled in these chapters come from diverse cultural, social, economic and spiritual backgrounds: from patrician heads of household to widows, from saints to artistic patrons, each of the women featured in this interdisciplinary study offers us fresh insight and a broader perspective on the position and role of female protagonists in the history of early modern Tuscany. Employing a variety of methodological approaches, and aided by new archival material, this volume examines women's ordinary and extraordinary experiences through their writings, cultural and religious activities, social and political networks, and commercial endeavors. In so doing, the volume raises insightful questions about the scope of women's accomplishments and provides new direction for the future study of women's agency and self-fashioning."

Released in 1994, the album resonated across a generation, combining elements of metal, industrial, synth-pop, and ambient electronica, and going on to sell over four million copies. Now, Into the Never explores the creation and cultural impact of The downward spiral, one of the most influential and artistically significant albums of the twentieth century"

Never Say Sell is a how-to guide for executives, account teams, and sole proprietors for growing exiting accounts and turning their one-and-done clients into a source of recurring revenue. Most providers will explain account growth by saying, "Do good work," arguing if they deliver value to clients, then clients will want more of their expertise and turn to them again and again for help. Unfortunately, this truism is as unhelpful as it is wrong. Never Say Sell reveals the truth and describes a new client-centered approach to account development"

"In The American people: volume 2: The brutality of fact, Larry Kramer completes his radical reimagining of his country's history. Ranging from the brothels of 1950s Washington, D.C., to the activism of the 1980s and beyond, Kramer offers an elaborate phantasmagoria of bigoted conspirators in the halls of power and ordinary individuals suffering their consequences. With wit and bite, Kramer explores (among other things) the sex lives of every recent president; the complicated behavior of America's two greatest spies, J. Edgar Hoover and James Jesus Angleton; the rise of Sexopolis, the country's favorite magazine; and the genocidal activities of every branch of our health-care and drug-delivery systems. The American people: volume 2 is narrated by (among others) the writer Fred Lemish and his two friends -- Dr. Daniel Jerusalem, who works for America's preeminent health-care institution, and his twin brother, David Jerusalem, a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp who was abused by many powerful men. Together they track a terrible plague that intensifies as the government ignores it and depict the bold and imaginative activists who set out to shock the nation's conscience. In Kramer's telling, the United States is dedicated to the proposition that very few men are created equal, and those who love other men may be destined for death. Here is a historical novel like no other -- satiric and impassioned and driven by an uncompromising moral and literary vision."

The dark and stunning stories in Add This to the List of Things That You Are explore how we sustain relationships when everything goes sideways and how we find meaning when the old patterns and structures of life give way. Many of Chris Fink's characters have outgrown their rural roots but still feel ill-equipped for the urbane scenarios in which they find themselves. Many of the narratives center on the melancholic dislocations of Midwestern men--dislocations provoked by forces ranging from the unknown terrain of travel to emerging romantic relationships."

It identifies recent trends with potential growth in destinations, types of holiday, the criteria holidaymakers use when planning a holiday, and how the final choice is made. Despite significant changes globally as the coronavirus became a pandemic, the strategic approach identified here still forms a sound basis for taking the industry forward. Whether you are a student on a travel and tourism course, part of the global travel agency network, a tour operator, or provider of products and services, this book covers the underpinning profile of who the 50+ mature customer is, what they are looking for, and, ultimately, strategies to inform and encourage them to buy in the future.

Bargaining for life : a social history of tuberculosis, 1876-1938 Bates, Barbara, 1928-2002. University of Pennsylvania Press 1992 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=9780812231205/lc.jpg Bargaining for life : a social history of tuberculosis, 1876-1938 Tuberculosis was the most common cause of death in the nineteenth century. The lingering illness devastated the lives of patients and families, and by the turn of the century, fears of infectiousness compounded their anguish. Historians have usually focused on the changing medical knowledge of tuberculosis or on the social campaign to combat it. In Bargaining for Life, Barbara Bates documents the human story. Using a wide range of sources, especially the extensive correspondence of a Philadelphia physician, Lawrence F. Flick, Bates portrays the lives of tuberculous men and women as they tried to cope with the illness, get treatment, earn their living, and maintain their social relationships. Their caretakers, including relatives, clergy, physicians, and nurses, all had their own reasons for providing help. In ways that differed with class, race, gender, and sometimes political influence, sanatoriums, hospitals, and visiting nurse societies mediated various bargains between the sick and their caretakers. Bates concludes that the campaign to control and cure tuberculosis had little impact on the disease, but it offered care, assuaged fears of infection, and expanded the welfare system. Choices made by the sick helped to shape the institutions and affected the results of the campaign. Many of the bargains between patients and caretakers are still discernible in the U.S. health care system. Bates has written an extraordinarily insightful book that combines social history, medical history, and nursing history. It will interest scholars, students, health professionals, and general readers who care about and care for chronically ill people.

The contributors encourage connections between art history, exhibition studies, and architectural history, and explore micro-histories and long-term changes in order to open new perspectives for studying these pioneering exhibition-making practices. Aiming to understand what spaces have done and still do to art, the book explores an underdeveloped area in the field that has yet to trace its interdisciplinary nature and understand its place in the history of art. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, museum studies, exhibition history, and architectural history"

And it's about time. How people treat each other--colleagues, communities, customers--matters. Calderoni knows people choose Anaplan, whether to work with them or buy their products, in large part because of the experience his company culture creates for them. People feel heard, included, and respected. Calderoni knows from Anaplan's hypergrowth experience, and from observing other highly successful businesses, that focused strategy is how they realize growth. It is essential for business strategy to encompass both character and culture--they are how strategy wins. Positive corporate culture is well established as a gating factor to high employee engagement that drives strong business performance. According to a report published by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, there are three primary filters by which the public views and evaluates companies"

The RAF has, for the British military, a short history of just 100 years, during which time it has faced huge challenges: wars for survival, complicated wars on foreign soil, complex peacekeeping missions, humanitarian efforts and the extraction of British citizens from the wars of others. It has dealt with enormous societal upheaval, technological change and organisational restructuring (both expanding and contracting). Through it all it has remained successful. That success is due in great part to its leadership. The RAF leadership model provides detail of the behaviours, knowledge and skills that leaders need to be successful"

But inevitably some uncertainties will resolve to being certain, with only the timing and impact remaining unclear. It is in this phase change that people struggle most. Human beings are naturally wired to take a wait and see approach to managing uncertainty. But it is the opposite reaction that will actually help business leaders win in the remade world. Provoke frames why we act the way we do when faced with uncertainty and provides tools to do things differently. Rooted at the intersection between business and behavioral economics, the book explores the topic as it relates to other aspects of the human experience as well as teaching people across all walks of life how to provoke action as a mechanism to advance."

How do you get employees to be more accountable for their actions? Leaders need team members to be empowered and proactive post COVID-19. What are the roadblocks? How are they overcome? Most books on employee empowerment bypass two critical relationships: the employment compact and the job holder and their job. These two relationships hold the key to unlocking employee empowerment. This breakthrough book is for leaders who want to maximize performance through empowerment. It offers a new approach and practical strategies to energize employees to exercise their initiative when needed and be accountable for their actions. A proactive employee is engaged in their job and can confidently make decisions without overly relying on their manager.

The Beatles and economics : entrepreneurship, innovation, and the making of a cultural revolution Staley, Sam, 1961- author. Routledge 2020 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=1138363529/lc.jpg The Beatles and economics : entrepreneurship, innovation, and the making of a cultural revolution "The Beatles are considered the most influential popular music act of the 20th century, widely recognized for their influence on popular culture. The inability of other bands and artists to imitate their fame has prompted questions such as: How did The Beatles become so successful? What factors contributed to their success? Why did they break up? The Beatles and Economics: Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and the Making of a Cultural Revolution answers these questions using the lens of economic analysis. Economics provides the prism for explaining why their success - while legendary in scale - is not mythic. This book explores how the band's commercial achievements were intimately tied to the larger context of economic globalization and rebuilding post-World War II. It examines how The Beatles' time in Hamburg is best understood as an investment in human capital, and why the entrepreneurial growth mindset was critical to establishing a scalable market-niche and sustaining The Beatles' ability to lead and shape emerging markets in entertainment and popular music. Finally, later chapters consider how the economics of decision making and organizational theory helps us to understand the band's break up at its economic peak. This essential text is of interest to anyone interested in the economic dynamics and social forces that shape cultural change"

Adrian Rollini : the life and music of a jazz rambler Delden, Ate van, 1941- author. University Press of Mississippi 2020 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=1496825152/lc.jpg Adrian Rollini : the life and music of a jazz rambler "Adrian Rollini (1903-1956), an American jazz multi-instrumentalist, played the bass saxophone, piano, vibraphone, and an array of other instruments. He even introduced some, such as the harmonica-like cuesnophone, called Goofus, never before wielded in jazz. Adrian Rollini: The Life and Music of a Jazz Rambler draws on oral history, countless vintage articles, and family archives to trace Rollini's life, from his family's arrival in the US to his development and career as a musician and to his retirement and death. A child prodigy, Rollini was playing the piano in public at the age of five. At sixteen in New York he was recording pianola rolls when his peers recognized his talent and asked him to play xylophone and piano in a new band, the California Ramblers. When he decided to play a relatively new instrument, the bass saxophone, the Ramblers made their mark on jazz forever. Rollini became the man who gave this instrument its place. Yet he did not limit himself to playing bass parts--he became the California Ramblers' major soloist and created the studio and public sound of the band. In 1927 Rollini led a new band that included such jazz greats as Bix Beiderbecke and Frank Trumbauer. During the Depression years, he was back in New York playing with several bands including his own New California Ramblers. In the 1940s, Rollini purchased a property on Key Largo. He rarely performed again for the public but hosted rollicking jam sessions at his fishing lodge with some of the best nationally known and local players. After a car wreck and an unfortunate hospitalization, Rollini passed away at age fifty-three"

Toccata Press 2020 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=0907689922/lc.jpg Humperdinck : a life of the composer of Hänsel und Gretel Engelbert Humperdinck's opera 'Hänsel und Gretel' is one of the best-known in the repertoire, its melodies as familiar as folk-tunes - and yet no full-length biography of Humperdinck (1854-1921) has ever been published in English : although highly regarded a century ago, he has since been overshadowed by the continued success of his own fairy-tale creation. His other works remain essentially unknown, but they include five additional operas, ten further stage works (including music for four Shakespeare plays), pieces for orchestra and for chorus, and many songs. This book sets a pioneering examination of Humperdinck's entire output in a biographical framework, with detailed, illustrated descriptions accompanied by quotations from Humperdinck's contemporaries. Humperdinck was a quintessential composer of the Germany of the Kaisers : his maturation coincided with the establishment of the German Empire, and his training with teachers who remembered Beethoven and Schubert culminated in an apprenticeship with Richard Wagner. His talents won him entry to the Bayreuth inner circle and to the home of Johannes Brahms, and earned him a reception with Kaiser Wilhelm II and an evening in Theodore Roosevelt's White House. His friends included Richard Strauss, Hugo Wolf, Gustav Mahler, Giacomo Puccini and Isadora Duncan. Kurt Weill, Leo Blech, and Hans Pfitzner were among his hundreds of students.

Foreign body Barnett, Sarah Elizabeth, author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Foreign body Focusing on the human as subject, my thesis work, Foreign Body, is a series of oil paintings that depict concealed figures, various mechanical objects, drapery, and fragments of flesh. Teetering between realism and surrealism, these works create tension and uncertainty through close-ups, heavy distortions, and vague depictions of human figures. Juxtaposing outer and inner points of view, organic and synthetic material, and animate and inanimate forms, Foreign Body recalls correlations between exterior equipment designed to prolong human life and the interior organs that maintain it. These paintings also oscillate between depicting life-taking and life-sustaining situations, inviting consideration of the grey areas in-between. Furthermore, the relationships between each of these works also create an overarching yet subtle narrative about human self-preservation and mortality. The core of my work, however, exists behind its visible surface. Whether the viewer sees my painted subjects as being saved from or in the aftermath of a tragedy, the vivid color, texture, and details prompt them to look deeper.

The rural-urban divide in environmental concern : a cross-national comparison Weston, Michelle Olson, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 The rural-urban divide in environmental concern : a cross-national comparison This study examines two streams of scholarship on environmental concern - differences between urban and rural populations and cross-national comparative work - to determine how concern about the biophysical environment compares across rural and urban places in 35 countries. Previous scholarship on the subject notes that variance in environmental concern is correlated with demographic factors such as age, gender, education and rural or urban residence. However, the study of the latter - the effect of residency on environmental concern - has been largely limited to studies focusing on these dynamics within one country. The focal point of this research is the comparison of rural and urban populations' concern for the environment in an international context. I use data from the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) to compare perspectives on environmental concerns across the rural-urban continuum in thirty-five countries. Seven countries show statistically significant differences in concern for the environment between urban and rural populations. This study confirms that - with respect to environmental concern - the rural-urban divide is pervasive across continents. Further, this research sets the groundwork for future scholarship to explore the contexts that lead to differences in environmental concern across the rural-urban divide and countries.

Associations among proxies for pathogen stress and consumption of plant secondary compounds : a country-level analysis Martello, John Luke, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Associations among proxies for pathogen stress and consumption of plant secondary compounds : a country-level analysis Self-medication is the consumption of toxic plant secondary compounds in response to pathogen risk and infection. In animals, research initially focused on large-brained vertebrates that consumed novel plant toxins via associative learning. However, recent studies on insects have shown that self-medication can also be an 'innate' behavior mediated by still unclear immunity pathways. Among humans, self-medication is thought to be primarily a cultural or learned behavior, but an evolved behavioral response to self-medicate in response to pathogen risk and infection is conceivable. In this exploratory study, the consumption of toxic plant secondary compounds such as common drugs, stimulants, and spices was tested as a dependent variable in response to proxy measures of pathogen stress at the country level. Unique to studies on human self-medication were measures of spice, drug, and food consumption using actual quantities available domestically for human consumption at the country level. Additionally, a pathogen stress variable was created using a principal component analysis of disability-adjusted life years of various infectious diseases. Results from several linear mixed effects models for each medicative substance indicate that tobacco use, spice consumption, and alcohol consumption were positively associated with some proxies of pathogen stress, whereas coffee and tea were not. This study provides greater insight into the validity of different proxy measures for pathogen stress and a first attempt at analyzing the consumption of multiple toxic plant secondary compounds in response to pathogen stress among humans at the country level.

The work directs attention to synthetic and organic debris that I elevate beyond the limits of form and function through thoughtful processes. The interaction of materials with color and space draws interdisciplinary connections to the languages of abstract painting and music. Complex orchestration of forms in the gallery asks the viewer to spend time with the work and invites them to explore multiple viewpoints as they walk through the space. Open Harmony fosters a sense of interconnectedness and endlessness as the viewer becomes lost in the multitude of dynamic constellations. In this, I seek to foster a sense of looking and fluid moving that allows the viewer to forget where they came from, where they need to go, and even for a moment, be physically and psychologically present through their senses.

Plant community ecology and ungulate use of powerline rights-of-way in Northern Idaho and Northwestern Montana Fitzgibbons, Timothy A., author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Plant community ecology and ungulate use of powerline rights-of-way in Northern Idaho and Northwestern Montana Powerline rights-of-way provide permanently maintained linear corridors of early seral vegetation that can harbor high levels of biodiversity. Management of vegetation located within powerline rights-of-way, as guided by the framework of Integrated Vegetation Management, creates three distinct vegetative zones: the forest zone, border zone, and wire zone. The implementation and management of distinct vegetative zones creates structurally complex physiognomies supporting diverse plant communities and a variety of wildlife, including economically and culturally important ungulates such as white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and Rocky Mountain Elk (Cervus canadensis). This study analyzed components of plant community ecology and explored ungulate use in these three distinct vegetative zones found within powerline rights-of-way in northern Idaho and northwestern Montana. Hypotheses explored were: 1) species diversity and richness values vary according to vegetative zone, and, 2) ungulate use will also vary by vegetative zone, as influenced by plant community composition and percent accepted forage cover. Vegetation surveys and linear mixed models were used to explore differences in Shannon's diversity index and species richness values between different study sites and the vegetative zones in the rights-of-way at those sites. Fecal pellet count surveys and generalized linear mixed models were used to explore white-tailed deer and Rocky Mountain elk use in distinct vegetative zones. Results from the vegetation surveys and corresponding analysis showed species richness and species diversity increased from forest zone to the wire zone, potentially driven by changes in light intensity, edge effects and frequency of disturbance. Fecal pellet count surveys combined with floristic analysis and linear mixed models suggested that ungulate use was most apparent in vegetation zones that contained the highest abundance of accepted forage species. Observations suggest that ungulate use and foraging behavior could be altered in powerline rights-of-way by pressure from natural predators and human intrusion. These results imply that utility companies and land managers should continue using or adopt integrated vegetation management practices to encourage the development and persistence of early seral plant communities in right-of-way features potentially conserving or enhancing biodiversity at landscape scales.

An evaluation of the changes in manual therapy techniques in physical therapy Rojas, Nelson Alberto, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 An evaluation of the changes in manual therapy techniques in physical therapy Prior research has focused on comparing the effects of manual therapy techniques used in physical therapy in different conditions to determine which technique is more effective and less invasive for the patient. However, no focus has been placed on identifying and evaluating the changes in manual therapy techniques. This study aims to evaluate the changes in manual therapy techniques from the perspective of current and retired physical therapists who are or were licensed in Washington state. Eighteen participants completed a modified Physical Therapy Profile Questionnaire (PTPQ) to explore their experience with manual therapy techniques and whether they implemented changes in their practice of these techniques. The results suggest that changes in manual therapy techniques occur as physical therapists gain and develop more experience working with many clients and treating different conditions. Joint mobilization, taping, and muscle energy techniques were the most used and recommended manual therapy techniques by physical therapists in this sample. There was no significant correlation between the years of practice and the number of manual therapy techniques selected by participants (r = -0.044, p = 0.887). This study suggests that changes and adjustments in manual therapy techniques have occurred throughout time as physical therapists gain practice in the field and can identify what manual technique will produce a better patient outcome in a specific patient.

Using the Kepler Space Telescope to search for active galactic nuclei Castillo, Brandon Dane, author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Using the Kepler Space Telescope to search for active galactic nuclei We use the Kepler Space Telescope to search for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). We look through 105 nearby galaxies and, using a customized pipeline, find two objects which demonstrate aperiodic variability typical of AGNs. One object, KIC 8093535, is a well-known X-ray source, giving us confidence that this is in fact an AGN. Using a damped random walk, we model our two objects and find that the stochastic variability is AGN-like. We also use the damping timescale to model the AGN central black-hole masses of our objects and find that both nuclei are in the upper Intermediate Mass Black Hole /lower Super Massive Black Hole regime.

Evaluation of recycled powders and pellets from brick, concrete, glass, and carpet waste to replace cement and fine aggregate in concrete Likes, Lauren M., author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Evaluation of recycled powders and pellets from brick, concrete, glass, and carpet waste to replace cement and fine aggregate in concrete The wide use of concrete in the world is the main building block of infrastructure construction and residential structures (OAR US EPA 2016). Global cement production has reached 4.1 Gigaton (GT) in 2019 and the CO2 intensity has increased by 0.5% per year from 2014 to 2018 (IEA 2020). One approach is finding supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to replace a portion of the cement in concrete, thus, lowering cement use and reducing the negative impacts of cement production on the environment. The first study evaluates recycled brick powder (RBP) and recycled concrete powder (RCP) as a 20% replacement by weight of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The RBP and RCP mortars and concrete met the minimum SAI of 75% of the 100wt%-OPC control at 7 and 28 days. RBP in concrete increased compressive strength (f'c) by 5% by 56 days along with improved durability by 24%. By 56-day, the RCP produced no statistical change in f'c. The second study evaluates recycled glass powders (RGPs) ball milled by two methods (steel balls (SB) and ceramic balls (SB)) as a 20% replacement by weight of OPC. The RGP (SB) and RGP (CB) also met the SAI index of 75% for 7 and 28 days in concrete. The RGPs in concrete increased the f'c by 19% for RGP(SB) and 5% for RGP(CB) by 56 days. The addition RGPs also increased the durability of concrete by 150% RGP(CB) and 130% for RGP(SB) based on surface resistivity. The last study utilizes waste carpet fiber made into pellets to replace fine aggregate in concrete at 10% and 20% by volume. The 28day f'c of cylinders was 23% and 28% lower than the CTRL, and the 28day flexural strength of beams was reduced by 14% and 17% for CP10% and CP20%. The flexural strength for CP10% showed no statistical difference. The ductility increased compared to the CTRL with CP10% at 7 (0.9mm) and 28 (0.8mm) days. This study's findings are encouraging and could lead to the development of recycling and reuse paths for these difficult to recycle consumer and construction & demolition waste materials.

Clinical characteristics and outcome in dogs treated with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy for non-functional sellar masses Hyde, Brittany, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Clinical characteristics and outcome in dogs treated with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy for non-functional sellar masses Objective: To characterize the clinical features, neurological examination findings, diagnostic imaging results, histopathological findings, and outcome following transsphenoidal hypophysectomy (TSH) in dogs with non-functional sellar masses (NFSM).Study design: Multi-institutional retrospective study. Methods: Medical records of dogs that underwent TSH for a confirmed NFSM were reviewed. Owners were contacted to assess long-term survivors. Results: The most common clinical sign at presentation was mentation change (12/15). The average pituitary to brain ratio (P/B ratio) was 1.05 (0.6-1.4), and most dogs had a tumor imaging classification of 5B (8/14). The most common tumor type was pituitary adenoma (11/15). Peri-operative mortality was moderate (5/15), specifically when tumors were not adenomas. The median survival for all dogs was 232 days (0-1658), and when dogs that did not survive to discharge were excluded, the median survival time was 708 days. Seven out of 10 owners of long-term survivors responded, reporting an excellent (6/7) to good (1/7) outcome. Most dogs that survived the peri-operative period received post-operative adjunctive therapy (7/10).Conclusion: Dogs with NFSM commonly presented with large tumors causing mass effect leading to mentation changes. Dogs that underwent TSH for a NFSM causing clinical signs of mass effect and survived to discharge had good to excellent outcomes as reported by owners. Clinical significance: TSH can be considered for the treatment of NFSM causing clinical signs of mass effect in dogs. Successful long-term outcomes are possible. Adjunctive therapy may improve survival when done in conjunction with surgery.

The goal of this body of work is to create a narrative that deviates from a specific space or time. It is honoring each woman for their own experience in life while simultaneously connecting them through elements that exist in different dimensions: the physical and the ethereal planes of the unknown. Longing places myself alongside the women who came before me, plucked from different timelines, not only to narrate their existence in a familiar place but to elevate the strength and wisdom gained through generational experiences. Stemming three generations, this series assigns each woman their own elements from nature based on my own memories with them, in turn constructing a familial mythology they share while maintaining their own unique individualism. My work explores the beauty of memory, emotion, interconnection, and cyclical patterns influenced by the colors, landscapes, plants, and animals of the southwest.

Physio-anatomical and ultrastructural perspective of red blotch : a relatively new virus disease of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) Hallwachs, Bailey, author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Physio-anatomical and ultrastructural perspective of red blotch : a relatively new virus disease of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) Red Blotch disease caused by Grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV) is a serious concern to grape growers and winemakers on the West Coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington. One crucial characteristic of all viruses, including Red Blotch, is the intimate association with cell components and anomalous structures following infection. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to investigate the fruit quality attributes and ultrastructure of various tissues and document the relationship between ultrastructural cytopathology and GRBV infection in 'Pinot Noir' employing various microscopy techniques from two vineyard locations in the Rogue Valley and Willamette AVAs in Oregon. The infected vines visually exhibited typical interveinal red blotches in the leaves with red-colored veins with flat leaf blade margins at the onset of berry ripening. The infected vines developed millerandage (large and small berries), with significantly lower fresh berry weight. Also, the infection significantly altered the primary and secondary metabolites desired for fermentation and the final composition of wine. Given that post-veraison berry development and ripening relies on phloem influx, the altered metabolism was indicative of a disruption of the phloem pathway. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the sieve plates in the leaves and petiole were plugged with P protein, thereby inhibiting exporting of photosynthates out of the leaf. Consequently, there was a massive accumulation of starch granules in the chloroplast, which reflects depressed translocation. However, this did not affect the primary leaf anatomical organization in the infected vines. The starch accumulation grotesquely altered the chloroplast ultrastructure ranging from degradation of grana and stroma lamellae to complete dismantling of the chloroplasts, which corresponded to an increase in plastoglobuli and tannins in the cytoplasm. This study demonstrated that the normal metabolism of the grapevines relies on the structural integrity of the plant's tissues.

Cannabis consumption techniques among adolescents across legal contexts in the United States Maynard, Christian P, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Cannabis consumption techniques among adolescents across legal contexts in the United States Cannabis vaping has been increasing with Monitoring the Future indicating cannabis vaping (2018 to 2019) for past 30-day use among 12th graders was the second-highest single-year jump ever tracked by MTF for any substance in its 45-year history. Research on vaping and, in particular, cannabis vaping, has been substantially limited. This study examined the associations between legal contexts (prohibited, medicinal, and recreational) and both general cannabis and cannabis vaping use. Additionally, other factors associated with general cannabis and cannabis vaping use such as availability and acceptability were examined. Using secondary data from Monitoring the Future: A Continuing Study of the Lifestyles and Values of Youth conducted in 2020, with a sample size of 3,770 participants, I find that medicinal states were associated with higher odds of general cannabis use and cannabis vaping, but recreational states were more similar to that of prohibited states. Adolescents with high-risk perceptions of regular cannabis use had decreased odds of general cannabis use and cannabis vaping use. Very easy access to cannabis and cannabis cartridges was associated with increased odds of cannabis vaping and general cannabis use. Lastly, adolescents with parents who strongly disapprove of regular cannabis use had significantly diminished odds of cannabis vaping and general cannabis use.

The relationship between perceived infectability and the health locus of control on pandemic related future discounting and the adoption of pathogen avoidance behaviors Hönig, Madison Aileen Cavaleiro, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 The relationship between perceived infectability and the health locus of control on pandemic related future discounting and the adoption of pathogen avoidance behaviors Utila, a Honduran Bay Island, has an economy reliant on tourism, which has been severely impacted by travel restrictions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Resulting stressors may further impact how individuals respond to the pandemic by affecting perceptions of future prospects, and the value of investment into health behaviors. However, individuals differ in both perceived threat from infection and perceived ability to affect personal health, referred to as the health locus of control, which past studies have associated with differential uptake of health treatment and prevention. Here, we examine perceived infectability and health locus of control measures, and whether these relate to discounting of future outcomes and uptake of infection prevention behaviors such as the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Interviews were conducted with heads of household (age: 17-83, N=292) during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (August-October of 2020). Results were analyzed by constructing a path analysis model. While perceived infectability positively predicted PPE usage, having an internal locus of control negatively predicted perceived infectability and was a strong negative predictor of PPE usage. This finding is opposite to our predictions and may suggest that those with an internal locus of control perceive that they can avoid illness without using PPE. Additionally, consistent with this, perceived infectability, belief in the role of chance in health, and higher internal locus of control all predicted more pandemic-related future discounting. Our results suggest that for residents of Utila, personal factors predict differential responses to pandemic-associated threats.

Changes in the fire regime and the relative of role fuel and climate of a historically flammability limited watershed in the western Cascades as it responds to two possible future climate scenarios Gendron, Jonathan, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Changes in the fire regime and the relative of role fuel and climate of a historically flammability limited watershed in the western Cascades as it responds to two possible future climate scenarios Anthropogenic climate change has shifted forest fire regimes in the Pacific Northwest U.S by increasing wildfire frequency and area burned and the shift is projected to continue during the 21st century if temperature and summertime aridity continually increase. Such changes threaten natural resources in these systems, including drinking water reservoirs, which could see reduced water quality during post-fire recovery. Productive forests with historically flammability-limited wildfire regimes are susceptible to large-scale high-severity events because of large fuel sinks; therefore, as flammability increases with climate change, the frequency of these events is also expected to increase. However, it is unclear how climate change and wildfire will alter long-term fuel availability in these forests; if a strong fuel limitation develops, it could potentially offset increases in fuel flammability. Herein, we apply RHESSys-WMFire, a process-based ecohydrological framework coupled with a stochastic fire-spread model and a post-fire effects model, to explore the long-term coevolution of climate, vegetation, and wildfire in a historically climate-limited forest in the western cascades as it responds to two future climate scenarios: (1) one that enforces extreme fire-weather, and (2) one that is less arid and more suitable for forest production. Both scenarios feature three 525-year climate sequences to capture the co-evolution of vegetation and fire behavior for three stable climate regimes: the present, near future (2040s), and distant future (2070s). Each sequence was constructed from 30 years of climate data from existing CMIP5 GCM using a randomized climate resampling technique. We found both climate storylines forced a fuel limitation that increased during the 21st-century; however, increases in fuel flammability were greater, and resulted in increases in wildfire size, frequency, and area burned in near and distant future relative to the present. The severity of fuel limitation also corresponded with shifts in the fire-size distribution and the fire recurrence interval of different elevations, wherein strong fuel limitation caused relatively smaller fires and lower frequency. We surmise that reduced fuel availability will scale with the severity of climate forcing; however, in forests where fuel flammability is presently low, it will begin to limit wildfire behavior until a certain threshold has been reached.

Globulin and amino acid composition of pea (pisum sativum) cultivars from the Inland Northwest United States and the impact of isoelectric protein extraction Choi, Halle Marie, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Globulin and amino acid composition of pea (pisum sativum) cultivars from the Inland Northwest United States and the impact of isoelectric protein extraction Globulin proteins, specifically vicilin and legumin, have been used to predict functionality of pea flour and pea protein isolates (PPI). Emulsion and foaming properties as well as water holding capacity, water solubility and absorption, and gelling behavior have all been shown to have correlations with quantities of vicilin and legumin present in various pulses. Amino acids contribute both to the functionality and the nutritional content of pea ingredients. In this study, agronomic traits such as pea color, shape, and bulk density were assessed for correlations with globulin and amino acid content. Globulin content had no significant correlations with agronomic traits. Essential amino acid content was significantly higher in green pea seeds than yellow. Fifteen cultivars of pea were assessed for globulin and amino acid content before and after isoelectric protein extraction (pH 8.5 and 4.3). Globulin and amino acids were significantly different by cultivar and between pea flour and PPI. Variation of globulin content within a cultivar increased after protein extraction. Cultivars that were grouped together in essential amino acid content in the flour were also similar in amino acid content in the PPI. Proximate protein content in the flour was negatively correlated with the protein extraction efficiency indicating higher ratios of water to sample or a higher extraction pH should be used to extract more protein. Vicilin content was lost during protein extraction. A new method with a precipitation pH closer to the isoelectric point of vicilin could be tested to try to maintain vicilin levels from the pea flour in the PPI.

Investigating the effects of a mechanical and chemical recycling method on the material properties of a virgin bottle-grade poly(ethylene terephthalate) Hatt, Jonathan Patrick, author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Investigating the effects of a mechanical and chemical recycling method on the material properties of a virgin bottle-grade poly(ethylene terephthalate) Plastic is a material that has provided many benefits to society. Its use spans across many faucets of everyday life, from the electronics we use, to the vehicles that transport us to the packaging used to protect our food. The beginnings of its mass manufacture started without due consideration to the end-of-life plan for the material. Now, an excess volume of plastic waste exists, and the consequences have yet to be fully understood. Recycling has been introduced as a method to manage the plastic waste and has been developed into four main categories. Of these four, only mechanical recycling and chemical recycling have been designed to process this post-consumer waste into a feedstock for reuse, but their use are not without limitation. Mechanical recycling melt processes plastic by extrusion and returns the material directly to a pellet form, but the risk of degradation to the material is high. Chemical recycling depolymerizes a plastic into monomers and oligomers by the use of solvents, but requires either high energy loads or complex catalysts. This research investigates both recycling methods on a common recycled plastic, bottle-grade poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), to study their impacts on material property. First, the extent of degradation to the bottle-grade PET was studied over four iterations of melt processing by extrusion at 260°C. After each iteration, a decrease in the molecular weight of the plastic was measured, impacting the crystallinity, rheological and mechanical properties. Second, a bottle-grade PET was reacted in an extruder-like reactor with ethylene glycol and zinc acetate dihydrate to study depolymerization over two reaction temperatures and three reaction times. Within 8 minutes, at temperatures of 255°C and 185°C, 98% of the bottle-grade PET was depolymerized to low molecular weight oligomers. This corresponded to a decrease in melt temperature from 242°C to 162°C.

College student boredom and trait boredom : a boring conceptualization and association with the meaning and attentional components (MAC) model Doering, Erica Lynn, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 College student boredom and trait boredom : a boring conceptualization and association with the meaning and attentional components (MAC) model Boredom is a ubiquitous, yet in many ways poorly understood, emotion. Our conceptualization of boredom is inconsistent and research has been limited until the last decade, leaving more to be understood. Guided by the Meaning and Attentional Components (MAC) model of boredom and using a prevention science framework, the purpose of the current study is to understand how college students conceptualize boredom and explore how MAC model components are represented in student perceptions and experiences of trait boredom, including proneness and susceptibility. College students conceptualize boredom as context, mismatch, Emotion, and technology/media. The MAC model components of meaning and attention predicted boredom proneness and susceptibility. Specifically, meaning was only a significant predictor for boredom proneness and attention was a significant predictor for both boredom proneness and susceptibility. This demonstrates how the two constructs of trait boredom operate differently within the MAC model. Information from my thesis will provide a better understanding of the meaning and underlying mechanisms of trait boredom and contribute to a long-term goal of identifying how boredom operates in college students so we can effectively promote healthy boredom coping.

This is especially true within natural resource policy. Issues of mistrust and lack of understanding have resulted in public rejection of scientific information and the policies it supports. Today, policymakers and natural resource managers seek out new innovative ways to improve communication and successful policy implementation. A current example of this can be seen in the aquifer decline within the Palouse Basin. Faced with a decision of providing alternative water supplies to the basin, members of The Palouse Basin Aquifer Committee are tasked with eliciting feedback from residents on which alternative is best for their community. In attempt to aid in this distribution, and create an accessible public feedback platform, a system dynamics model and two instructional platforms known as interfaces were created. Content within the interfaces remained consistent while the design of each differed. Interface A was designed through visual and design communication recommendations, while interface B followed traditional scientific design. Upon completion of the interface, users were prompted to a survey. Results clearly illustrate that images and graphs are more helpful than written sections when making an alternative decision. This demonstrates the need for STEM experts to no longer view visuals as a supportive after thought but as an effective avenue of communication with the public. Further design recommendations include that written sections must be concise in length, and to avoid or clearly define all technical jargon. Keep all audiences in mind when creating an interface and ensure disability and accessibility accommodations such as an audio option and mobile capabilities are present. Color within images is vital, but choosing the right range and amount of color is just as important. Intuitive colors within images helped increase understanding and retained attention but also caused the layout to appear cluttered and confusing. Finally, if the user is to navigate the interface without facilitation remember that explicit teaching and directional support must be present throughout.

Medical and performance trends in repeat ironman-distance triathlon competitors at the Ironman World Triathlon Championships Cho, Stephanie Patterson, author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Medical and performance trends in repeat ironman-distance triathlon competitors at the Ironman World Triathlon Championships Ironman-distance triathlon events are rigorous three-sport ultra-endurance competitions and often result in various adverse medical incidents among competitors. The overall purpose this thesis is to examine medical and performance trends for ironman-distance triathlon competitors over three decades. Standardized data sheets developed by race medical personnel were completed by registered nurses and physicians upon athlete check-in to the medical tent at the event between the years of 1989-2019. Medical trends were investigated for a repeat competitor population and competitors (n=427) were included for analysis within the current investigation if admitted to the tent for at least three competitions within a fifteen-year span. The performance trends investigation included all competitors (n=9446) that received medical attention at the Ironman World Championships from 1989-2019. For medical trends among repeat competitors, significant associations were found between several adverse medical incidents for competitors' first visit and for all 3+ year competitor visits. Additionally, repeat athletes experiencing hyponatremia, nausea, and muscle cramps during their first year had a significantly higher risk of returning with the same medical problem in subsequent years. Contrarily, participants that experienced vomiting during their initial visit were less likely to return for the same problem in subsequent years. For performance trends, significant differences were found between the category of an athletes' primary medical issue and finisher status. Athletes that experienced GI distress, dehydration, hyponatremia, and dizziness as a primary issue had significantly lower odds of finishing the race when compared to those with primary medical issues in other categories. Furthermore, we found that seeking medical attention for hyponatremia significantly decreased performance for the total sample, males, and females as well as the 18 and 30-49 age groups when compared to non-hyponatremic athletes. However, seeking medical attention for muscle cramps significantly increased performance for the total sample, females and the 30-49 age group.

Cheating cheatgrass : understanding the genetic and phenotypic variation underlying adaptive traits in downy brome Revolinski, Samuel Robert, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Cheating cheatgrass : understanding the genetic and phenotypic variation underlying adaptive traits in downy brome Bromus tectorum L., known as cheatgrass or downy brome, is arguably the most damaging invasive species in North America. Bromus tectorum reduces crop yields, increases the frequency of wildfires, and displaces indigenous species in North America, especially the intermountain west. The broad scale of damage to ecosystems and reductions in crop yields caused by B. tectorum necessitate action to mitigate ecosystem destruction and food shortages, and thus the on society. As a near obligate self-fertilizing species, B. tectorum has a life cycle uniquely adapted to the intermountain western United States. To adapt to natural ecosystems and cropping systems B. tectorum relies on variation in phenology traits and herbicide resistance. However, the source, maintenance, and impact, of the variation in phenology and herbicide resistance remains uncharacterized in B. tectorum. Using B. tectorum from the germplasm resource information network, the inland Pacific Northwest and Montana, we observed repeatable variation in phenology across the global accessions, between regions in North America and between genotypes sampled within the same location. A genome wide association study identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling height and phenology traits, revealing punitive candidate genes underlying the variation in phenology traits. However, a genome wide scan for genomic indicators of selection revealed multiple putative candidate genes from the ATP-binding cassette transporter, cytochrome P450, glutathione s-transferase, and glycosyltransferase gene families implicated in non-target site resistance, but only one gene implicated with phenology. Identifying non-target site resistance genes under selection and not phenology genes, implies that herbicide resistance is a greater driver of selection for B. tectorum, in the invasive range. Using stochastic forward genetic simulations we identified migration and selection as key factors to maintain the genetic and phenotypic variation present in B. tectorum. Individual-based simulations revealed that marginal environments, where annual plants have a low fecundity, outcrossing does not confer an advantage to adaptation. Developing novel management strategies for B. tectorum by should be based on both the genetic and phenotypic variation present in B. tectorum and the theoretical basis for maintenance of the variation observed.

Women of color writing at the intersections of the medical and environmental humanities : towards a socially just education Ramos, Heather Leigh, author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Women of color writing at the intersections of the medical and environmental humanities : towards a socially just education My dissertation urges for a social justice curriculum in medical education that intersects medical and environmental humanities. I examine interdisciplinary texts that include U.S.-centered literature, documentaries, activist discourses, medical journal articles, and environmental discourses. Through these texts, I demand greater attention to environmental factors as social determinants of health and how communities deemed disposable are disproportionately affected by health inequities. My dissertation utilizes frameworks borrowed from medical humanities, environmental humanities, critical race theory, gender theory, and disability politics, particularly slow violence, debility, and reproductive justice, to address the failures of a conservative medical humanities culture that ignores social injustices. Drawing upon women of color writing, including Audre Lorde's The Cancer Journals, Cherrie Moraga's Heroes and Saints, and Toni Morrison's Home, I theorize how their literary texts function as aesthetic blueprints of lived realities that are ignored in medical training. These aesthetic blueprints act as counter-narratives that re-present communities otherwise rendered disposable as active in coalitions, advocacy, and resistance. By examining these contemporary U.S.-centered texts alongside social movements, I elicit the participation of women of color writers and social movements in diagnosing social determinants of health. I also explore the role of these social movements in transforming medical treatment and the capitalist U.S. healthcare system. The chapters delve into specific case studies of health equity issues in conjunction with health and environmental justice activism. Analyzing the disparities and organizing surrounding breast cancer, pesticide-related illnesses, and forced sterilization, I emphasize the existence of and continued need for collective approaches to health injustices. The liberatory efforts of Black Lives Matter, White Coats for Black Lives, the Black Panther Party, the United Farm Workers, and SisterSong: Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective are centered in my dissertation. Collectively, these case studies support my argument that social liberation movements, and their connections to health and environmental activism, are also social determinants of health. This research joins the published critiques raised against medical education for ignoring oppressive systems and social justice by arguing that medical education should include attention to the historical roles of social movements in shaping medical discourse and practices in the United States.

Contributing a verse to the powerful play : the intersection of quantitative sociology, discourse, and meaning Lindstedt, Nathan C., author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Contributing a verse to the powerful play : the intersection of quantitative sociology, discourse, and meaning Sociology is synonymous with the study of sociality; it encompasses uncovering the fundamental relationships tying individual behavior to group behavior. Considerable labor by countless past scholars has been invested in building the groundwork for a quantitative sociology that is able to cope with the "duality of persons and groups." But neither persons nor groups are devoid of culture, cognition, or meaning. Recent work from practitioners of relational sociology has encouraged scholars to look at social life with fresh eyes and has proposed the need for analytical methods that are attendant not only to persons and groups, but to culture as well. Sociologists routinely make use of language as data. However, they have begun to lag behind other disciplines in pioneering approaches that are able to make use of the ever-growing availability of such data. This study provides researchers with an overview of two quantitative text analytic techniques--topic modeling and mental modeling

Floral traits in castilleja : how morphological traits and volatile organic compound emissions differentiate species, affect insect interactions, and influence plant fitness Hilpman, Evan, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Floral traits in castilleja : how morphological traits and volatile organic compound emissions differentiate species, affect insect interactions, and influence plant fitness One of the major goals of evolutionary biology is to explain trait variation within and among species. Much of the tremendous diversity in floral traits across angiosperm lineages is thought to reflect a history of close ecological associations with animals. While pollinator mediated selection on morphological traits has received much attention, surprisingly few have included floral scent into ecological or evolutionary analyses. Fewer still have compared the relative importance of such traits in mediating both animal pollination and predation using linear, quadratic and correlational models. Finally, this dissertation serves to document the first analysis of floral scent in the genus Castilleja. The purpose of this dissertation was to study plant-animal interactions mediated by morphological traits and floral scent. Data collected from natural populations were used to address the following questions in the genus Castilleja: 1) Does interspecific variation in plant traits predict pollinator visitation?; 2) To what extent does intraspecific variation in plant traits mediate both mutualistic and antagonistic interactions?; and 3) What forms of selection result from multiple plant-animal interactions affecting floral scent and morphological traits? We demonstrated that variation in floral morphological and scent traits among five species of Castilleja differentiated species and pollination syndromes, but did not reliably predict pollinator visitation. Extremely low rates of pollinator visitation across Castilleja species reduced statistical power of analyses reliant on direct observational data. However, using direct observations of antagonist seed predator visitation and indirect measures of seed predator and pollinator activity we detected associations between plant traits and animal behavior within a large population of Castilleja sessiliflora. While pollinator and seed predator activity was correlated with both morphology and scent, their activities were predicted by distinct traits. Directional, stabilizing, disruptive, and correlational selection were detected; and traits that experienced selection were evident during the seed initiation stage, suggesting a potential role of pollinators. However, marked changes in the direction and magnitude of selection were evident following visitation by seed predators. Overall, these results demonstrate that both scent and morphological traits mediate plant-animal interactions, and that both mutualists and antagonists significantly contribute to selection on plant traits.

The design, synthesis, and properties of tetraphenylethene-based coordination polymers Hurlock, Matthew, author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 The design, synthesis, and properties of tetraphenylethene-based coordination polymers Important issues such as the capture of greenhouse gases, the detection of hazardous chemicals, and the storage of energy require materials with tunable properties. Coordination polymers are a type of hybrid polymeric crystalline material formed from the connection of organic ligands and metal ions or clusters through coordination bonds. The wide array of building blocks that can be used enables coordination polymers to be rationally designed and tuned to possess specific properties. Amongst coordination polymers, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) stand out due to their porosity, large internal surface areas, and diversity of structures. These features can be achieved through direct synthesis as well as through directed modification of the framework post-synthetically. The study of the structures of MOFs and how they relate to the properties of the material, such as luminescence, is important to help gain a deeper understanding and to facilitate the development of new materials with desired functionality. Luminescent MOFs are of particular interest due to their potential as selective chemical sensors. Ligand-based fluorescence is one of the most common forms of luminescence in MOFs. Ligands built from the molecule tetraphenylethene (TPE) are ideal candidates for these systems. The aggregation-induced emission properties of TPE molecules can be enhanced through rigidification within a coordination network. This work seeks to further understand how the structures of TPE MOFs relate to the properties of the framework. To accomplish this, a variety of new coordination polymers were synthesized using TPE ligands with carboxylate functionalization at the para- and meta-positions. The fluorescent properties of coordination polymers constructed from para-functionalized TPE ligands was controlled through post-synthetic insertion of additional ligands. Coordination polymers formed from meta-functionalized TPE ligands tended to form dense, non-porous structures but the properties of these materials could be controlled through mixed ligand synthesis. This approach allowed for the control of the fluorescence emission as well as the porosity of the frameworks. Through this work, a better understanding of how TPE ligands and their conformations influence the structure and properties of coordination polymers is gained, which will aid in the rational design of these types of materials.

Learning to be an intensive parent : uncovering the process of adult socialization Clayson, Amanda Dale, author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Learning to be an intensive parent : uncovering the process of adult socialization A paradox exists among today's middle-class parents. Parents today face increased strain on their personal resources, yet middle-class parents continue to make significant investments of time, money, and emotional energy into their children-a practice known as intensive parenting (Hays 1996). The current study seeks to understand why this paradox exists by looking at how parents come to hold intensive parenting standards for themselves. It was speculated that others' negative judgements during social interactions played a part in why parents held themselves to intensive parenting standards. Data was collected through 55 in-depth interviews with mothers and fathers. Findings reveal that intensive parenting standards are adopted by many from their own parents, but standards are renegotiated by couples once they become parents themselves. Fathers often defer to mothers to guide and direct the resource investments they make in their children. Some evidence is given for why those with reason to resist intensive parenting ideals do not. Adults that struggle to meet identity standards may not speak out to change those standards because they want to avoid scrutinization of their performance. Surprisingly, parents do not hold to intensive parenting standards because of the pressure they feel from others' judgements. Instead, they hold to them as a strategy to create security for their children's future, which is seen as a positive and meaningful endeavor. These findings give explanation for why intensive parenting remains prevalent in a resource-strained society.

Genetic characterization of barley and pyrenophora teres host pathogen interactions Clare, Shaun James, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Genetic characterization of barley and pyrenophora teres host pathogen interactions Net blotch is a globally important pathogen of barley, causing economic loss worldwide due to 10-40% yield reduction or quality degradation when susceptible varieties are grown under conditions conducive to disease development. There are two forms of net blotch, termed net form net blotch caused by Pyrenophora teres f. teres (Ptt) and spot form net blotch caused by Pyrenophora teres f. maculata (Ptm). In addition, Ptm has recently been reported to infect wheat, exhibiting symptomology resembling the closely related pathogen Pyrenophora tritici-repentis causing the wheat disease tan spot. Previously, the limited analysis of barley-Ptm genetic interactions suggested limited overlaps with Ptt, thus it was suggested that the two pathosystems should be considered separate. However, the data presented here shows that there are several overlapping resistance/susceptibility loci between the two pathosystems, thus this recommendation may not be entirely correct. Over 500 barley loci have been reported in respect to Ptm and Ptt resistance or susceptibility using association or biparental mapping. These 500+ loci were collapsed into 73 consensus loci with 34 loci overlapping between the two forms of net blotch. Subsequently, association mapping was performed in wild and landrace barley against both Ptm and Ptt identifying 14 loci, four of which are novel. The first association mapping was also performed on 127 Ptm isolates inoculated on 30 barley accessions identifying 30 pathogen virulence loci, 26 of which are novel, including one that exhibits reciprocal virulence on different barley genotypes. Subsequently, candidate gene identification was performed for the reciprocal virulence locus designated Pyrenophora teres f. maculata Disease inducing effector 1 (PtmDie1) by performing genome assembly of the Ptm isolate 13IM8.3. Lastly, biparental mapping was conducted on an F2 mapping population exhibiting hybrid susceptibility designated the Susceptibility to Pyrenophora teres 2 (Spt2) gene despite the utilization of two resistant parents. The locus was mapped to a 249 kb region of the Morex reference genome assembly containing two candidate genes.

An examination of indoor air quality in residential homes using fine-scale temporal measurements and future climate model simulations Lima, Nathan Michael, author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 An examination of indoor air quality in residential homes using fine-scale temporal measurements and future climate model simulations Poor air quality is considered to be one of the leading causes of global non-communicable disease and mortality. People in the United States spend 87% of their time in enclosed buildings and 69% of that time is spent in their residence. A building's envelope filters pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM) and ozone (O3), as air infiltrates into a building. The indoor environment is also directly affected by indoor sources due to outgassing from indoor materials or due to activities of the occupants such as cooking or cleaning. The outdoor environment around a building is in a constant state of change due to the diurnal cycle caused by solar radiation and on longer time scales caused by changing weather and climate. Therefore, it is important to understand the impacts that could arise from a changing climate. The CONTAM computer model is used to simulate indoor air quality of both fine-scale temporal measured test homes as well as representative U.S. building stock homes. It was found that CONTAM can closely simulate fine-scale temporal measured homes mean concentrations. The process and methodology used from the EPA STAR test homes was applied to simulate representative U.S. building stock homes from three 10-year periods centered on 2000, 2050 and 2090. It was found that the impacts due to climate change on IAQ are very location and home dependent, but tight homes with controllable outdoor air supply system have more to mitigate the effects.

Surface morphology and durability of nanosecond laser textured hydrophobic austenitic stainless steel Reid, Douglas James, author Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Surface morphology and durability of nanosecond laser textured hydrophobic austenitic stainless steel This work reports on the modification of austenitic stainless steel by nanosecond laser treatment to develop hydrophobic properties. Hydrophobic properties of steels are desirable for use in the nuclear industry where contamination prevention is a need during service. After laser etching, samples were ultrasonically cleaned in sulfuric acid and heat treated to significantly decrease transition time from hydrophilic to hydrophobic behavior. The effect of the scan line laser power and frequency on surface wettability of nanosecond laser textured surfaces were investigated on austenitic stainless steel grades 304, 310, and 316. Water contact angle, surface profilometry, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis were used to probe the nature of the hydrophobic surface and the influence of laser etching parameters, surface roughness, elemental composition, oxide growth, and environmental conditions. . The durability of the treated samples against radiation, corrosion, and abrasion was also investigated. The results showed that hydrophobicity can be induced without major sacrifices in material properties using the nanosecond laser etching process.

Development, characterization, and assessment of low-cost, hands-on educational tools for improving understanding of heat transfer phenomena Reynolds, Olivia M., author. Washington State University 2022 Book - Electronic https://via.placeholder.com/262x400 Development, characterization, and assessment of low-cost, hands-on educational tools for improving understanding of heat transfer phenomena Active learning is widely recognized as superior to traditional passive, lecture-based techniques for fostering learning in STEM courses. Interactive, hands-on learning where students interact with their peers and physical systems is an effective type of active learning. As the need for scientists and engineers continues to grow, understanding and incorporation of interactive learning pedagogies into STEM classrooms is critical. This dissertation is focused on the development, characterization, and assessment of very low-cost, visual hands-on learning tools which can be used to demonstrate and foster understanding of complex heat transfer phenomena in undergraduate engineering courses. First, the performance of a miniaturized double pipe heat exchanger is presented. Behavior can be predicted highly accurately with industrial correlations and results from conceptual and motivational assessments show the heat exchanger helps improve understanding and is well-received by students. Next, the effectiveness of the double pipe heat exchanger is compared to the effectiveness of a simpler module for demonstration of basic fluid mechanics principles. Two module implementation modes are compared: in-person and virtual demonstration. Hands-on and virtual implementations are shown to promote similar improvements in student understanding, highlighting the usefulness of the learning modules and other hands-on learning pedagogies in resource-limited or distance-based education settings. The double pipe heat exchanger module is shown to be significantly less effective for promoting conceptual understanding gains compared to the simpler fluid mechanics module and reasons for this are discussed. Finally, the development and characterization of a new module to demonstrate evaporative cooling, which is a complex heat and mass transfer process used in several industrial and residential processes, is detailed. The behavior of the device is evaluated with a fractional factorial design, compared to performance trends observed with larger-scale systems, and a new numerical model for prediction of water and air temperatures and performance is presented. Overall, the miniaturized evaporative cooler is shown to behave similarly to large-scale systems, highlighting its usefulness as a classroom teaching tool.

Duke University Press 2022 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=1478016353/lc.jpg Surface relations : queer forms of Asian American inscrutability "In Surface Relations Vivian L. Huang traces how Asian and Asian American artists have strategically reworked the pernicious stereotype of inscrutability as a dynamic antiracist, feminist, and queer form of resistance. Following inscrutability in literature, visual culture, and performance art since 1965, Huang articulates how Asian American artists take up aesthetics of Asian inscrutability-such as invisibility, silence, unreliability, flatness, and withholding-to express Asian American life. Through analyses of diverse works by performance artists (Tehching Hsieh, Baseera Khan, Emma Sulkowicz, Tseng Kwong Chi), writers (Kim Fu, Kai Cheng Thom, Monique Truong), and video, multimedia, and conceptual artists (Laurel Nakadate, Yoko Ono, Mika Tajima), Huang challenges neoliberal narratives of assimilation that erase Asianness. Known as a seminal Supreme Court case and civil rights victory, Brown v. Board of Education resulted from many legal battles that predicated its existence. Marisela Martinez-Cola writes about the many important cases that led to the culmination of Brown. She reveals that the road to Brown is lined with "bricks" representing at least one hundred other families who legally challenged segregated schooling in state and federal courts across the country, eleven of which involved Chinese American, Native American, and Mexican American plaintiffs. By revealing the significance of Chinese American, Native American, and Mexican American segregation cases, Martinez-Cola provides an opportunity for an increasingly diverse America to be fully invested in the complete grand narrative of the civil rights movement. To illustrate the evolution of these cases, she focuses on three court cases from California, including these stories as part of the "long civil rights movement," and thus expands our understanding of the scope of that movement along racial, gender, and class lines. Comparing and discussing the meaning of the other court cases that led to the Brown decision strengthens the standing of Brown while revealing all the twists and turns inherent in the struggle for equality"

American identity has always been bound up in war-from the revolutionary war of our founding, to the civil war that ended slavery, to the two world wars that launched America as a superpower. What did the current wars say about who we are as a country, and how should we respond as citizens? Unlike previous eras of war, few other Americans have had to do any real grappling with the endless, invisible wars of the post-9/11 world at all; in fact, increasingly, few people are even aware they are still going on. It's as if there's a dark star with a strong gravitational force that draws a relatively small number of soldiers and their families into its orbit, while remaining inconspicuous to most other Americans. In the meantime, the consequences of American military action abroad may be out of sight and out of mind, but they are very real indeed. This chasm between military and civilian in American life, and the moral blind spot it has created, is one of the great themes of Uncertain Ground, Phil Klay's powerful series of reckonings in essay form over the past ten years with some of our country's thorniest concerns. In the name of what do we ask young Americans to kill, and to die? In the name of what does this country hang together? As we see at every turn in these pages, those two questions have a great deal to do with one another, and how we answer them will go a long way toward deciding where our troubled country goes from here"

Wealth, poverty, and charity in Jewish antiquity Gardner, Gregg, 1976- author. University of California Press 2022 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=0520386892/lc.jpg Wealth, poverty, and charity in Jewish antiquity "Charity is a central concept of the Jewish tradition. In this formative study, Gregg E. Gardner takes on this concept to examine the beginnings of Jewish thought on care for the poor. Focusing on writings of the earliest rabbis from the third century C.E., Gardner shows how the ancient rabbis saw the problem of poverty primarily as questions related to wealth-how it is gained and lost, how it distinguishes rich from poor, and how to convince people to part with their wealth. Contributing to our understanding of the history of religions, Wealth, Poverty, and Charity in Jewish Antiquity demonstrates that a focus on wealth can provide us with a fuller understanding of charity in Jewish thought and the larger world from which Judaism and Christianity emerged"

But beyond the headlines, Thomas' life is a classic American tale; born poor in the segregated South, only to become one of the most influential justices in the highest court in the land. In the follow-up to the wildly successful documentary by the same name, Created Equal builds on dozens of hours of groundbreaking, one-on-one interviews with Thomas to share a new, expanded account of his powerful story for the first time.

The result is an unflinching investigation of the cultural, political, and economic drivers that led to unnecessary loss of life. Readers will be in the room as fateful decisions are made, meeting people at the center of the political system, health care system, patients, and caregivers. The story that emerges is one of a country in which bad leadership, political and cultural fractures, and an unwillingness to sustain sacrifice light a fuse that is difficult to extinguish.

The hundred-year marathon : China's secret strategy to replace America as the global superpower Pillsbury, Michael. Henry Holt and Company 2015 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=1627790101/lc.jpg The hundred-year marathon : China's secret strategy to replace America as the global superpower "For more than forty years, the United States has reached out to China, helping it develop a booming economy and take its place on the world stage, in the belief that there is little to fear--and everything to gain--from China's rise. But what if the Chinese have had a different plan all along? The Hundred-Year Marathon reveals China's secret strategy to supplant the United States as the world's dominant power, and to do so by 2049, the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic. Michael Pillsbury, who has served in senior national security positions in the U.S. government since the days of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger, draws on Chinese documents, speeches, and books (many of them never translated into English) to reveal the roots of this strategy in traditional Chinese statecraft and track how the Chinese are putting it into practice today. Pillsbury shows how American policymakers have been willfully blind to these developments for decades--and he includes himself in that critique, as he was once a leading voice in favor of aiding China. He also calls for the United States to design a new, more competitive strategy toward China as it really is, and not as we might wish it to be. The Hundred-Year Marathon is a wakeup call for all Americans concerned about how we have misread the greatest national security challenge of the twenty-first century"

The rich and the pure : philanthropy and the making of Christian society in early Byzantium Caner, Daniel, author. University of California Press 2021 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=0520381580/lc.jpg The rich and the pure : philanthropy and the making of Christian society in early Byzantium "As the Roman Empire broke down in western Europe, its stability and prosperity moved decisively to the east, producing history's first truly affluent, multi-faceted Christian society, in what is now known as the Byzantine Empire. What united the twenty-four million people living in this vast realm--Roman citizens all, but as diverse as the landscape itself--was a shared conviction in the Christian ideal of philanthrōpia. In this sweeping cultural and social history of Christian philanthropy, Daniel Caner shows this practice involved more than simply a love of humanity; it required living up to Jesus's injunction to 'Give to all who ask of you' by offering mercy and material aid to every human being, whatever their origin or status. Yet this commitment to the common good arose in an aristocratic society marked by sharp gradations of rank and privilege and dominated by an official church experiencing explosive growth and unprecedented affluence. In tracking the evolution of distinctive ideals and modes of Christian giving over three centuries, Caner brings to the fore the people of Byzantium, from the countryside to the lower levels of urban society to the elites, and the complex, hierarchical relationships that these gifts fostered among them. Drawing on an immense range of evidence, The Rich and the Pure offers nothing less than a portrait of the whole of early Byzantine society"

1000 years of joys and sorrows : a memoir Ai, Weiwei, author. Hailed as 'the most important artist working today' by the Financial Times and as 'an eloquent and unsilenceable voice of freedom' by The New York Times, Ai Weiwei has written a sweeping memoir that presents a remarkable history of China over the last 100 years while illuminating his artistic process. Once an intimate of Mao Zedong, Ai Weiwei's father was branded a rightist during the Cultural Revolution, and he and his family were banished to a desolate place known as 'Little Siberia, ' where Ai Qing was sentenced to hard labor cleaning public toilets. Ai Weiwei recounts his childhood in exile, and his difficult decision to leave his family to study art in America, where he befriended Allen Ginsberg and was inspired by Andy Warhol. With candor and wit, he details his return to China and his rise from artistic unknown to art world superstar and international human rights activist--and how his work has been shaped by living under a totalitarian regime. Ai Weiwei's sculptures and installations have been viewed by millions around the globe, and his architectural achievements include helping to design the iconic Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing. His political activism has long made him a target of the Chinese authorities, which culminated in months of secret detention without charge in 2011. Here, for the first time, Ai Weiwei explores the origins of his exceptional creativity and passionate political beliefs through his own life story and that of his father, whose own creativity was stifled. At once ambitious and intimate, '1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows' offers a deep understanding of the myriad forces that have shaped modern China, and serves as a timely reminder of the urgent need to protect freedom of expression"

Ghanaian painter Amoako Boafo has built a practice synthesizing the ways that art both reflects and perpetuates the power of representation. Amoako Boafo is the first monograph to comprehensively examine the artist's career to date. Heavily illustrated and featuring original contributions by Osei Bonsu, Rachel Cargle, Mutombo Da Poet and Aja Monet, the book also presents an insightful and expansive conversation with the artist by Paul Schimmel. Exclusively portraying individuals from the diaspora and beyond, Boafo invites a reflection on Black subjectivity, diversity and complexity. His portraits, notable for their bold colors and patterns, celebrate his subjects as a means to challenge portrayals that objectify and dehumanize Blackness. As Boafo has stated, "the primary idea of my practice is representation, documenting, celebrating and showing new ways to approach Blackness.""

From idols to icons : the rise of the devotional image in early Christianity Jensen, Robin Margaret, 1952- author. University of California Press 2022 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=0520345428/lc.jpg From idols to icons : the rise of the devotional image in early Christianity "From Idols to Icons tells the fascinating history of the dramatic shift in Christian attitudes toward sacred images from the third through the early seventh century. From attacks on the cult images of polytheism to the emergence of Christian narrative iconography to the appearance of portrait type representations of holy figures, this book examines the primary theological critiques as well as defenses of holy images in light of the surviving material evidence for early Christian visual art. Against the assumption that fourth- and fifth-century Christians simply forgot or ignored their predecessors' censure and reverted to more alluring pagan practices, Robin M. Jensen contends that each stage of this profound change was uniquely Christian. Through a careful consideration of the cult of saints' remains, devotional portraits, and pilgrimage to sacred sites, Jensen shows how the Christian devotion to holy images came to be rooted in their evolving conviction that the divinity was accessible in and through visible objects. Even the briefest glance at a museum's holdings or an introductory textbook demonstrates how profoundly influential this belief would be on the course of Western art for the next fifteen hundred years"

The pedagogy Albers developed at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College, and Yale consisted in a dynamic approach to teaching that transcended modernist agendas: it involved a set of ideas and practices that cultivated a material way of thinking among his students, which included notable future artists such as Eva Hesse and Richard Serra. By using exercises including paper folding, cutting, and collage, Albers tried to generate a form of "productive disorientation" in his students, teaching them problem-solving strategies to explore new conceptions of composition and color. Saletnik begins by examining Albers's pedagogy in relation to modern aesthetic, scientific, and educational thought. He then examines his design, drawing, and color instruction, focusing on his relationship with Hesse and Serra, showing how their approach to material and scale were shaped by Albers's teaching. Featuring many novel images--including nineteenth-century children's teaching toys as well as rarely seen works by Albers, Serra, and Hesse--this book challenges art historians to consider how artists are introduced to problems of form and how pedagogy shapes their work"

University of Michigan Press 2022 Book - Physical https://proxy-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/exl_rewrite/syndetics.com/index.php?client=primo&isbn=0472133098/lc.jpg Collecting the now : on the financial side of postwar art history "Collecting the Now offers a new, in-depth look at the economic forces and institutional actors that have shaped the outlines of postwar art history, with a particular focus on American art, 1960-1990. Working through four case studies, Michael Maizels illuminates how a set of dealers and patrons conditioned the iconic developments of this period: the profusions of pop art, the quixotic impossibility of land art, the dissemination of new media, and the speculation-fueled neo-expressionist painting of the 1980s. This book addresses a question of pivotal importance to a swath of art history that has already received substantial scholarly investigation. We now have a clear, nuanced understanding of why certain evolutions took place: why pop artists exploded the delimited parameters of aesthetic modernism, why land artists further strove against the object form itself, and why artists returned to (neo-) traditional painting in the 1980s. But remarkably elided by extant scholarship has been the question of how. How did conditions coalesce around pop so that its artists entered into museum collections, and scholarly analyses, at pace unprecedented in the prior history of art? How, when seeking to transcend the delimited gallery object, were land artists able to create monumental (and by extension, monumentally expensive), interventions in the extreme wilds of the Western deserts? And how did the esoteric objects of media art come eventually to scholarly attention in the sustained absence of academic interest or a private market? The answers to these questions lie in an exploration of the financial conditions and funding mechanisms through which these works were created, advertised, distributed, and preserved"

Virtual reality is genuine reality. That's the central thesis of Reality+. In a highly original work of "technophilosophy," David J. Chalmers argues that virtual worlds generated by computers are not second-class worlds. We can live a meaningful life in virtual reality. We may even be living in a computer simulation already-and if we are, that's not so bad. What is reality, anyway? How do we know there's an external world? What's the relation between mind and body? How can we lead a good life? Is there a god? In Reality+, Chalmers conducts a grand tour of philosophy, using virtual worlds to illuminate all of these questions and to provide new answers to many of them. Studded with illustrations that bring philosophical issues to life, Reality+ is a major statement that will shape discussion of philosophy and technology for years to come"

This project considers the historic and contemporary role that photography and film have played in remembering legacies of slavery and its aftermath while examining the social lives of Black Americans within various places including the land, at home, in photographic albums, at historic sites, and in public memory. This exhibition acknowledges artists' constant involvement with efforts to explore the possibilities of freedom and their relationship to it. Their quest to be 'as free as they want to be' is envisioned in the subject matter they explore as well as in their persistent drive to innovate aesthetic practices in photographic media. The publication presents some 20 artists working in photography, video, silkscreen, projection, and mixed media installation. Free as they want to be is inspired by the words of James Baldwin and the timely theme of FotoFocus, World Record, as well as events of late that have shaped the world as we know it. The artists selected for this publication are on the frontlines, creating, documenting, and writing. The works they have conceived reflect defining moments in the struggle for racial justice and equality. Exhibition: FotoFocus Biennial exhibition, venues across Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton, and Columbus, USA (29.09.-08.10.2022).
